One of the world’s leading classification society and a recognized advisor for the maritime industry, Norwegian DNV Group, has reported a cyber-attack on one of its systems “ShipManager”. DNV, said it took the servers offline after detecting a cyber incident on 7-Jan-23.
The attack is presumed to be the work of a ransomware group which encrypted the “ShipManager” system used to manage the crewing and maintenance schedules of vessels across the globe. It is unclear whether the company paid the ransom or not, but the attack caused significant disruptions to the shipping industry, affecting around 1000 vessels, and highlighted the potential impact of ransomware on critical infrastructure.
